The Red Ring of Death, as we call it, seems to be more common than we think. The reason for the red ring is debated and has not been confimed Microsoft. According to experts in the field, over heating is the number 1 cause. Microsoft has given the Xbox 360 a 3 year warranty, but what about those of us who's warranty has already expired?
Here are a few methods to repair your Xbox 360 console, other than sending it in for repairs from the manufacturer...
1. The towel trick: Remove the Hard Drive and all accessories. Wrap your xbox in a double layer of thick towels and leave the power on for 15 minutes afterwards, allow the console to cool down for 30 minutes. The idea is to bake the innards of the 360 to the point that all of the loose solder connections melt and reform... Hey, if your unit is already toast, whats a little more heat?
2. The Eraser mod: This one requires taking the 360 apart (so long warranty) and sticking slices of rubber eraser to the GPU memory units. The idea is to put pressure on the chips and ensure a better connection between them and the motherboard. Google it for more in depth information.
3. Hair-Dryer: Umm... this one is the same idea as the towel trick but requires you to open the 360 and wrap the CPU and GPU in foil. Using the Hair-Dryer, bake them back to health. Again Google the mod before conducting on your own Xbox 360.
Please note that we do not endorse any of these methods, although I have personally used the towel trick on one of our TGN 360 consoles with success!
